Setting the scene for an Easter afternoon tea party starts with picking the right theme and color palette. I’m a fan of pastels and floral prints—they scream springtime and make everything festive. Imagine a table decked out in soft pinks, baby blues, and hints of soft green, all drawing guests into a dreamy, sunny atmosphere.
Invitations are like the movie trailer for your event, so they’ve got to be. I spent a little extra time creating email invitations using the Canva app, and they turned out pretty cute.
The seating arrangement can be a game-changer, but I believe in making it easy on myself since I’m the host and in a wheelchair. My tea table holds eight guests maximum, so I have six dining chairs, plus my wheelchair, and I bring in one extra for the last person. My table is set up in my sunroom surrounded by windows to my deck and the forest, and bird feeders out my windows.
As the host, I’m fairly limited in my wheelchair, so I ask two extraordinary ladies to sit at both ends of the table and act as teapot controllers. They are responsible for keeping the pots filled with water, filling the guest’s teacups and keeping the candles lit in the teapot warmers. They also help pass the containers of tea bags I offer my guests to choose which tea bag they would like to steep in their teacups.
My Table
A table setting is all about balance and beauty. I love creating centerpieces that are conversation starters themselves. I filled decorator crystal glasses with remarkable imitation easter eggs of all colors for this Easter Tea. One guest brought in a small vase of yellow roses, which adorned the center of the table between the three different tiered servers. There were also votive glasses and candle holders at each place setting, giving the table a nice little glow. My tablecloth was a lovely soft green, and the table runner had an Easter theme with bunnies and spring flowers that matched the tablecloth.
My tea set was the Phoenix AMCLIFE Blue-21 piece set with an additional floral teapot at the opposite end of the table from the Phoenix teapot. There were white linen napkins, small gold tea spoons, forks, and butter knives at each place setting, along with golden metallic lace placemats. This time, I set crystal wine glasses out to offer the guests some sparkling wine if they wished. These elements complemented each other and made the table inviting and elegant.
Timeline
Having a timeline is key to keeping everything running smoothly. I made sure to plan each part of the day, actually the entire reparation weekend too, factoring in time for some relaxation. A clear schedule helps me as a host and my guests, who appreciate knowing what’s going on. Keeping things casual yet organized is my go-to approach for every event.
Menu
I purchased part of the food items for my party the day before, made the quiche late the evening before, and made the sandwiches the morning of the party. My table was all decorated and set up the day before, so I’d have to add the food right before the party. Some of my guests came early and helped me get the food out.
A Feast for the Senses: Delicacies and Beverages Offered
Creating a memorable menu for an Easter afternoon tea party involves mixing tradition with a sprinkle of surprises. To start, sandwiches are a must-have.
I love the classic cucumber and dill combo, but adding a twist with a hint of lemon zest makes them even more delightful.
All love biscuits with ham and cheese. (I made these for my party).
Mini croissants filled with smoked salmon or egg salad also hit the sweet spot for taste and style. (I also had egg salad sandwiches for my party).
This time I purchased mini scones of blueberry lemon and some garlic savory mini scones
Pastries and sweets are where you can really let your creativity shine, especially if you are a skilled baker. Easter-themed cupcakes in pastel frostings and lemon tarts. Buttery scones served with clotted cream and jam are staples that never disappoint. For that extra Easter touch, cookies like bunnies or eggs can add a playful vibe. If you lack baking skills, like me, you can always purchase from local bakeries or delis. My purchased decorated Easter cookies were enjoyed along with the mini iced cupcakes and tasty mini brownies.
When it comes to tea, variety is the spice of life. I made sure to have a range of teas from a robust Earl Grey to a soothing chamomile. For this party, I chose bagged teas, mostly herbal.
Not everyone’s a tea lover, so a little something for everyone is essential. Consider offering herbal blends, or even a refreshing iced tea for those warm spring afternoons. And it’s hard to say no to a bubbly splash of wine or champagne, which adds a festive flair to the gathering. I offered bubbling wine to my guests this time.
Presentation
Presentation is everything, even when it comes to food. Plating up these delights with a keen eye for color and symmetry can transform a simple dish into an Instagram-worthy spread. And as much as I love a good spread, keeping portions manageable encourages mixing and matching, letting guests savor a taste of everything available. For this Easter Tea, I served it on three different tiered porcelain servers.
Charming Hospitality: Delightful Party Favors
The joy of a tea party doesn’t just stop at the last sip or bite; I love to extend it with thoughtful party favors that leave a lasting smile on my guests’ faces. Choosing the right favor is about capturing a piece of the event that guests can take home. Sachets of loose tea tied with a cute ribbon are practical and perfectly on theme.
Tailoring favors to guest preferences ensures everyone leaves happy. A small, beautifully packaged jar of honey or homemade jam can add that personal touch. These little details show your thoughts on each guest’s experience.
Adding a thank-you note or a charming tag can elevate even the simplest favor. It feels good to connect personally, reinforcing the bond shared during the party.
Sometimes, the favor itself can reflect the party’s theme beautifully, like an Easter egg filled with chocolates or a mini potted plant that complements the floral decor. It’s a memento that brings back memories of the lovely afternoon shared together. I included a single easter themed napkin to my gift favor along with a special herbal tea bag and personal digitally painted headshots I created later for each guest.
Remember, these gestures don’t need to break the bank or be overly elaborate. I focus on sincerity and what will genuinely delight my guests, making sure they remember the fun and warmth of our time spent together.
Activities for All: Engaging Guests in Memorable Experiences
Adding a creative flair to the afternoon can transform a simple gathering into something truly memorable. Introduce a hat-making corner, where guests can decorate their own Easter bonnets. Seeing everyone’s personality shine through their creations is a treat in itself, and it adds a personal touch to the day.
Interactive activities like storytelling or a group game can quickly break the ice among guests. Whether it’s sharing funny tales or teaming up for playful Easter charades, having everyone involved keeps energy high and spirits even higher.
For a touch of sophistication, a tea-tasting ceremony offers a unique experience. It’s a chance for guests to savor different flavors, learn a bit about tea origins, and share their thoughts over a relaxing discussion.
Craft stations are another hit, especially when they bring out the inner artist in each guest. Picture everyone around a table crafting their personalized Easter cards or trying their hand at simple DIY flower arrangements.
Capturing these spontaneous moments is crucial, so I always keep a camera handy. Candid snaps of guests engaged in activities not only make wonderful memories but can also be part of a digital album you share later.
For this tea I set up a small vanity table and mirror where my guests picked out tea hats and fascinators to wear for photos. As a former photographer and artist, I edited and digitally painted these images to create small 5×7 portraits of each guest with their hats. It was fun choosing hats or fascinators and helping each other pin them on. Each guest got to keep their chosen hat or fascinator. I also digitally enhanced and painted 5×7 images of each guest and emailed them later.
I shopped online sales for 3 months to be able to offer various hats/fascinators for this event. Amazon has some great pricing on fascinators and hats sometimes.
Cherished Conversations: The Heart of the Tea Party
Conversations are the lifeblood of any gathering, and around my Easter tea table, they’re enriched by the relaxed atmosphere I aim to create.
Mixing guests from different backgrounds guarantees a rich variety of stories. It’s amazing how often people find unexpected connections or mutual interests in the middle of discussing everyday topics.
Sharing stories while sporting those tea hats adds a whimsical twist that lifts the mood. It’s a lovely way to blend elegance with a hint of fun, nudging everyone toward lighter, joyful interactions.
Tea etiquette tips can also make for light-hearted chat. Sharing quirky facts about tea ceremonies or learning about each other’s tea preferences sparks lively discussion—it’s always interesting how personal these rituals are for different people. My guests were a mix of my neighborhood lady friends and new friends. Nevertheless conversations were easy.
As the tea flows and plates empty, these conversations become the glue holding the day together. There’s just something about a cup of tea that slows down time, allowing genuine connections to blossom.
The Grand Finale: Tidying Up and Planning the Next Soiree
Wrapping up such a delightful afternoon with a smooth cleanup process helps keep everything in stride. Using reusable decor and recyclable disposables where possible can make tidying up quick and guilt-free, keeping the environmental impact low.
My wonderful guests always have my heartfelt gratitude when they hop in and help clean up the table, knowing my wheelchair makes moving and carrying items difficult, especially the delicate porcelain tea set. If we have leftovers, my guests get to take them home.
After everyone had headed home, I enjoyed reviewing the pictures from the day. Capturing those candid moments and curated shots of the food and decor provides a digital gallery to remember the event by. Sharing these with the guests later extends the joy and lets them relive those lovely moments.
Assessment
Reflecting on what went well and areas where I might do things differently next time keeps me evolving as a host. Perhaps there’s a recipe to tweak or a new activity to introduce—there’s always something to learn for the next gathering.
I’m already thinking ahead and excited to brainstorm ideas for future events. Whether it’s a summer garden party or another themed tea, having a plan in mind helps keep the host’s spirit alive. My current plan is to host an Independence Day Tea later this year to help celebrate our Nation’s upcoming 250 year birthday, since our President is planning a year of celebration starting this year. I’m already selecting table linens and decorations for my Amazon wish list.
With a happy heart and a wealth of feedback from friends, I close the chapter on this beautiful day, quietly mulling over how the next event might unfold and what new experiences it will bring. Love Shirley
