Tea and Jigsaw Puzzles: A Relaxing Ritual We Love

There are few things in life more relaxing than a quiet evening at home with a warm cup of tea. Add a beautiful jigsaw puzzle to the mix, and for me, it becomes one of the most enjoyable little rituals of everyday life.

My husband and I have developed quite a habit of working puzzles together. While some couples watch television every evening, we often find ourselves gathered around our puzzle board, slowly piecing together another beautiful image while I sip my tea.

It’s simple. It’s peaceful. And honestly, it’s one of my favorite ways to unwind.

Why Jigsaw Puzzles Are the Perfect Tea-Time Activity

Tea has always been about slowing down and enjoying the moment. That’s exactly what puzzles encourage as well.

When you sit down with a puzzle, there’s no rushing. You gently sort pieces, look for patterns, and slowly watch an image come to life.

Add a warm cup of tea beside you and the experience becomes even better.

Our Favorite Puzzle Brand

Over the years we’ve tried several puzzle brands, but my favorite is Ravensburger.

Their puzzles are known for:

We’ve tried other brands and even wooden-type puzzles, but Ravensburger is our favorite. I’ll share some links to a few of them below.

Most of the puzzles we choose are 1000-piece puzzles, which provide just the right level of challenge without taking forever to complete. We’ve tried 2000 and even 3000 piece ones but they take days to complete and the pieces cover our entire large dining table. So mostly we choose 1000-1500 piece puzzles

A good puzzle might last us several evenings, which gives us plenty of time to enjoy the process.

Our Very Different Puzzle Tastes

One of the fun parts of puzzling together is that my husband and I have completely different tastes in puzzle images.

My favorites tend to be:

Fantasy scenes
Romantic cottages
Beautiful streams
Ocean landscapes
Animal themes

I love puzzles that feel peaceful, dreamy, and a little magical.

My husband, on the other hand, prefers something entirely different.

His choices usually lean toward:

Geometric patterns
Modern designs
Architectural images
Structured layouts

And I have to admit… he’s much better at puzzles than I am.

He even has his own system for solving them.

I’m more of a “wander around the puzzle and see what happens” type of puzzler, while he methodically sorts pieces and builds sections with impressive efficiency. We’ve gotten into a habit of sorting the edge pieces together, and I start working on the outlike while Mel takes the harder task of putting together some interior areas of the puzzle. When I finish the edge outline (sometimes with a little final help from my husband), he moves it onto the puzzle board and figures out wherethe interior areas will be. After that, I will do a “sort by color” and place pieces in the special drawers the board includes, and work on them myself.

But somehow we always meet in the middle and finish the puzzle together. I must say that Mel is usually the one who finishes putting in the final pieces. Because sitting and working on the puzzle is often uncomfortable with my bad back, he works on it for longerthan I do. I’ll go sit for a while and drink my tea, then have to leave it and go back to my recliner till my back feels better.

Our Puzzle Board Game Changer

A couple of years ago we gave ourselves a Christmas present that completely changed our puzzling experience — a puzzle board.

This board is fantastic.

It includes:

A large puzzle surface
Four sorting drawers for organizing pieces
A rotating turntable base that lets us spin the puzzle around easily

That rotating feature is especially helpful because we can simply turn the board to reach different sections of the puzzle without stretching across the table.

It makes puzzle night much more comfortable and organized.

Sharing Puzzles With Friends and Neighbors

Over time we’ve built up quite a stack of completed puzzles around the house.

Instead of letting them sit on a shelf forever, we love sharing them.

We often trade puzzles with:

Neighbors
Other puzzle lovers
Plus, it’s fun to hear how someone else enjoyed working on the same puzzle you just finished.

Trading puzzles is a great way to keep enjoying new puzzles without constantly buying more. We get a lot of our new puzzles from our visits to Barnes & Noble. I always check which puzzles are on sale. I’ve also ordered puzzles from Amazon. It is awesome to find gorgeous puzzle images there.

My Little Tea Ritual

For me, puzzles are always paired with a cup of tea.

Before we start working on a puzzle, I brew a fresh cup and settle in with my favorite teacup — a very special one that belonged to my Aunt Ola (my favorite aunt). She brought it back from overseas while they lived near Japan.

It’s one of those little heirlooms that carries memories with it. Every time I use it, I think about her.

There’s something comforting about holding that teacup while quietly working on a puzzle.

Tea turns puzzling into more than just a hobby.

It becomes a small evening ritual this is both fun and challenging to share with my spouse.

Celebrating Each Finished Puzzle

Once we finally place that last puzzle piece, there’s always a little moment of satisfaction.

Before taking the puzzle apart, I usually snap a photo of the finished puzzle and post it on my personal Facebook page.

It’s fun to look back later and see all the puzzles we’ve completed over time.

And of course, once the photo is taken, the puzzle pieces go back in the box… ready to be shared or traded with another puzzle lover. We take good care of our puzzles so others can enjoy them, making sure we keep all the pieces. There is nothing worse than losing a puzzle piece and it makes us frantic if we get to the end and there’s a little “hole” in the image.

Life doesn’t always need big events to be enjoyable.

Sometimes the best moments are simple ones:
