Tea Parties Aren’t Just for Kids
When most people hear the words tea party, they picture little girls in dress-up clothes, tiny cups, and pretend tea But somewhere along the way, we forgot something…
Tea parties aren’t just for kids. In fact, they might be even better as adults.
I recently had a conversation at a patio party I attended with a man who was astonished that I hosted tea parties at my home for my neighbor’s ladies and friends. His thoughts on a tea party centered around little girls and their “pretend” parties. But some of my neighbor ladies assured him that this was an adult event and was very popular in today’s society. Why Tea Parties Feel So Special
There’s something about tea that naturally slows everything down. You’re not rushing. You’re not multitasking. You’re present.
A tea party—even a simple one—creates space for:
- real conversation
- quiet moments
- laughter that doesn’t feel hurried
It’s less about perfection… and more about connection.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Fancy
Here’s the best part—you don’t need a perfectly styled table or expensive china. (However, that’s one of the things I love about hosting a tea party – I enjoy the beauty of an elegantly decorated table)
A cozy tea party can be as simple as:
- your favorite mug or teacup
- a small plate of cookies or sandwiches
- a quiet corner of your home
Add a candle, a flower, or even just good lighting—and you’re already there.
But there is a kind of elegance and joy in a fully decorated table that adds to the “magic” and enjoyment of a tea party. I adore that feeling, and it’s so much fun to be part of.
Tea Parties for Grown-Ups
Tea parties aren’t about pretending.
They’re about:
- catching up with a friend
- inviting a neighbor over
- spending time with your daughter or granddaughter
- or even enjoying a peaceful moment alone
You can keep it light and simple…
or turn it into something a little more special.
A Few Easy Ideas If you want to make it feel like a “real” tea party
- Pick a theme – garden, vintage, cozy afternoon (my next hosted tea party will be in July and the theme will be US Independence)
- Use a teapot if you have one
- Add something homemade (even if it’s just store-bought with a pretty plate. ( personally love t o make my delicious mini quiches)
- Put your phone away for a bit
That’s it.
Don’t Forget Yourself
One of the nicest tea parties you can have… is one you create just for you.
A warm cup of tea. A quiet table. Maybe your tea journal or a good book. That counts.
And honestly, your own special Tea Ritual might be the one you enjoy the most.
A Cozy Little Reminder
Tea parties don’t have to be big or planned or perfect. They just have to feel good.
So the next time you’re making tea…why not turn it into a moment worth sitting down for?
Key Takeaway
Tea parties aren’t just for kids—they’re a simple, beautiful way to slow down, connect, and enjoy the moment… one cup at a time.
My Personal Tea Time
I recently set up my personal Tea Ritual (a time to relax, sip some tea, enjoy a good book, or listen to music). I do this regularly to force myself to slow down and take time to breathe, think, and sip my tea. I usually set this up on my dining room table (at least until I finally choose the tea cart I want to purchase). Read about my search for the perfect tea cart here.

I set out my newly created Tea Time coloring book (from my Tea Time Shop) for adults and “little helpers” so I could use my new colored pencils from Amazon to color one of the pages. I can tell I’m going to love this set of coloring pencils.
I also included my newly printed Tea Journal from my Tea Time Shop, which I’m using to jot down my thoughts, my new ideals and my “TODO” items.
I’m using a teacup and saucer from my Mom’s Japanese china se, which is very special to me. I set up a Glass Teapot from Amazon, which I originally purchased as part of a Blooming Tea set, but I tend to use it to hold my boiling water. It’s sitting on my ceramic warmer, which came with that Flowering Glass Teapot set from Amazon, wihich uses a small tea candle lit to keep it warm.
I’m drinking one of my favorite teas from The Republic of Tea, “Comfort and Joy.” I love the cinnamon holiday scent, and not just for the holidays. The Republic of Tea is where I purchase a lot of my teas because I love their beautiful containers andbecause they offer both tea bags and loose-leaf teas.
I recently purchased another tea-related coloring book from Amazon (Creative Haven Afternoon Tea Coloring Book) that is for adults like myself who love tea-related products, and I laid it out too, just in case.

I really love how you reframed tea parties as intentional moments of slowing down rather than big, elaborate events. Your reminder that a cozy gathering can be as simple as a favorite mug and a quiet corner is so grounding. One thing others might find helpful too is choosing one “anchor ritual” — like a specific tea blend or a small treat — to make the moment feel special without adding pressure. This was such a comforting read.
Thank you very much for your kind comment.
many times I’ll have a small snack. With my tea time. I have nights I can’t sleep and I live to set it for my tea time then. I drink many herbal teas that are not caffeinated. Thank you. -Shirley
